Never stop growing

Jack Darden’s attitude of ‘Never stop growing’ and ‘You can do it’  reverberates through the Computer Information Technology classes at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Shelbyville today.    His personality of wanting to grow and to learn everything in IT started 17 years ago when he entered my class.    Hearing from him tonight truly put a smile on my face.

You see, entering IT before MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and popular social media sites; Jack saw broadband at ISDN speeds, monitors when they were CRTs and operating systems from the ’90s.    Now this may sound like it was a long time ago to students today but it was truly just yesterday in IT.  The knowledge our program gave Jack at the time was primitive compared to what we teach today.  So how did Jack become successful?  It was his initiative, motivation, worker ethics and  arduous work that made him successful.

While I’ve repeated his name over and over to show how these quality traits can make students  succeed in information technology – it is ultimately up to students to continue learning in such a dynamic field in order to become successful.

So,  how has Jack grown over the years?

  • Technical Support Tech. – Computer Manufacturing – (Technical Support)
  • Information Technology Supervisor -Manufacturing. (networking, servers/desktops, software development, database administration, exchange, etc.)
  • Application Development – Law Enforcement (software development, database administration)
  • Manager, Business Intelligence – Healthcare (data warehouse management, software development management, enterprise reporting management)
  • Manager, Business Intelligence – Healthcare (data warehouse management, software development management, enterprise reporting management)
  • Manager, Business Intelligence – Medical Retail (data warehouse management, software development management, enterprise reporting management)
  • Manager, Corporate Data Architecture – Publishing (E-Commerce database management, data warehouse management, enterprise reporting management)

Jack often surprises me with messages, calls or visits.  What’s not surprising is seeing him grow every time we talk.  I’m glad to call Jack a peer and a good friend.
