How to repair the boot loader on your HDD or SSD

If your once booting Windows is not booting, you may want to repair the boot loader (This is not reboots due to a bad program, application or virus)

Windows 8/8.1

  • Boot with your install DVD
  • Chose Troubleshoot and Advanced options
  • Select Command Prompt
  • Type the following:
    • Bootrec /fixmbr
    • Bootrec /fixboot
    • Reboot
    • If the Reboot fails, got to step 1 and follow the directions down the list –
      after Bootrec /fixboot –  use the following:

      • bootsect /nt60 c: /force /mbr
      • bcdboot c:\windows /s c:

*Reference – Microsoft   (These specific commands have been used by individuals to repair the boot record and boot sector.)

Make sure you have backed up your data
