How long will you be on help desk?

Three former students recently contacted me to update me on their careers.  There’s always a question before they leave college.  How long will I work help desk?  We wrote an article several years ago – “It takes time in the trenches of help desk”  

Rhett Turner attended our college and graduated the LPN course. He went on to take his board exam and became a LPN.   His curiosity in computers and technology led him back to our college and into my class several years back.   Rhett was the epitome of a perfect student.  Great worker ethics, grades and was one of the best at hands-on projects.   Rhett graduated our program several years ago and began working in the healthcare industry.  Rhett continues his education and is working towards his degree.

After spending a couple of years in a hospital environment, he was recently promoted to Manager of Technology Managed Services.

Two weeks ago, Bryant Prater, another former student came to visit.  Bryant, a former student, had worked three years on help desk and had an opportunity to work in a data center in middle Tennessee.  He of course took the job and had stopped by to tell us thanks.

This weekend I received a new message from a former student named Will Hasty.  Will has worked help desk for over two years now and is soon going to work as a Network Administrator Level II.

So how long will you be on help desk?   It can be a year or even a couple of years.   Continuing your education, learning all that you can about information technology and the job you’re working can result in job offers or promotions.   Be sure to go over and read the article we wrote on your first IT job.
