Speed up Quickbooks

If you search the web for “Quickbooks Slow”, you will get thousands of returns.  Thousands.

We have tried every solution recommended.  Our solution:

  • The server should have 8 GB and run the latest update from Intuit (Server Download).
  • The server should have a SSD Drive.  Drop your database on this drive.
  • The server’s nic should be set to 100 mbps Full Duplex (1 Gbps if available).  Disable everything under the advanced properties except flow control.
  • Quickbooks should be open (running) on the server.
  • The workstations should have 4 GB or RAM with a SATA Hard drive.
  • The workstation’s nic should be set to 100 mbps Full Duplex (1 Gbps if available).  Disable everything under the advanced properties except flow control.
  • Ensure QuickBooks uses the correct amount of cache to optimize performance

Our times trimmed  (opening time):

  • Workstation One 45 seconds – 15 seconds
  • Workstation Two 1 minute 38 seconds – 10 seconds <-This workstation had a dual core processor installed.

Search Time (Invoice or Vendor)

  • Workstation One 6-9 seconds – 1 second
  • Workstation Two 6-9 seconds – 1 second

Before trying to open the file, modify the hosts files on the server.

Often users may complain that QuickBooks is slow on their network.   In order to resolve these issues, make sure that you follow their recommendations and then you can try the following solution:

Modify the hosts and lmhosts files in the Windows folder.  Open the files using Notepad when asked how you want to open them.   The files are found in the following path:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Modify the hosts file and save as the Administrator (You must log with the administrator account) and add your QuickBooks server to the bottom of this file (IP address and NetBIOS name)-

# so keeping the number of comments to a minimum will improve performance.
# Therefore it is not advisable to simply add lmhosts file entries onto the
# end of this file.
