Typically if your computer cannot travel across your LAN but can get out to the internet, this can be due to the following-

  • Computer Browser Service is not running
  • Client for Microsoft Networks is not installed

So if you type \\thecomputeryouaregoingto and it can’t find the computer and the computer you are navigating to has its firewall off or has the appropriate ports open, you may want to try this

After bashing our heads out by doing network card driver updates, checking services and firewalls, running nbtstat -r and other commands such as a netsh reset, we discovered that with Windows 7 there can be another reason.  We also ran the commands below.
