Create MD5, SHA Checksums

ExactFile is an excellent program to create a file integrity check.  Its features includes-

  • A file integrity for-
    • Use it to make sure files copied to CD-ROM are bit-perfect copies,
    • Use it to make sure backups copied from one drive to another are just right,
    • Use it to make sure files haven’t been changed or damaged over time.
  • Multi-threaded.
  • Supports Unicode -
  • Supports multiple checksum routines (hashes), like MD5, SHA1, CRC32, RIPEMD.
  • Recursive directory scanning.

Slow Network?

Do you have a computer that responds slow on the network or hesitates?  Follow these steps and you will see a significant difference. (Because we have not shown how to disable advanced settings in your network card, simply go to your device manager and double click on your network card – disable TCP offload and any advanced settings such as proxy and other settings that may make the card hesitate)

  1. Remove any add-ins on your Browsers that you don’t need
  2. Remove Toolbars
  3. Adjust your MTU Settings
  4. Adjust your Network Speed
  5. Disable LLMNR
  6. Disable all advanced settings on your card

Running BackTrack on Virtualbox

Network administrators should perform penetration tests on their network to include their routers, firewalls, switches, wireless APs, wireless bridges, web servers and all critical nodes.  BackTrack is an excellent program to perform penetration tests and to evaluate the security of your network.

Security Analyst can dedicate a computer to BackTrack or remain productive and download the iso along with Oracle’s VirtualBox to use the program virtually.   (Licensing of VirtualBox)

Once VirtualBox is installed, the setup of BackTrack is Easy.

  • Download BackTrack and copy the iso to a folder
  • Open VirtualBox
  • Click on Create
  • Follow the Wizard setting up memory, hard drive and OS information
  • Go to Settings
  • Select System and move the CD/DVD Rom to top of the Boot Order
  • Select Storage and set the attributes by selecting the ISO you downloaded
  • Select Network and select Bridged along with Promiscuous mode
  • Click OK
  • Double click the machine you just created
  • Once booted, you can elect to install BackTrack or continue to run it as is.

Clean your pc with CCleaner portable

When working on computers, you often have a flashdrive with all of your utilities.  Portable applications are great because they don’t have to be installed (often many computers won’t let you install programs if they are unstable).  Mickey pointed out CCleaner Portable which allows you to clean your computer from your portable drive.
