Clean Your Computer’s Registry
I have used cleanup utilities that clean Microsoft’s Windows’s registry through cleanup programs but I have not found a registry cleaner that cleans safer and better than MV RegClean. MV RegClean has been around for some time and can be downloaded at CNET. The author is Marcos Velasco and the original website is not in English. The history (years) and number of downloads ensures this software is free of malware and spyware. Remember when cleaning a registry, this will greatly improve your computer’s performance but there is always a risk when running any utility. MV RegClean has a backup option that can be used before cleaning your registry. Invalid entries to disconnected drives are also removed (removable flash drives).
After installing and testing freeware for class in only a month, you’ll see how many items are invalid after installing the software.

Cyber Security Awareness Month
We are always repairing computers that have P2P file sharing software on them. Usually viruses such as trojans or even bots are on the computer after the person came in and complained that the computer has became slow and unresponsive. We also see more and more computers that have been infected or an email identity stolen from a social networking site.
First off to correct the problems, users should never download what they think is ‘free’ music or movies regardless of how safe they think it is. This is illegal and breaks copyright laws unless the artist has elected to give away their music.
- Always chose a complex password and don’t use the password on multiple accounts.
- If one account (a social site) is stolen, the likelihood that the email will be stolen is stands near 100%.
- Don’t make just anyone your friend on social sites and stop telling people where you are and stop putting too much information on the web. Cell phone numbers, addresses, schedules, what you are wearing, license plate information, geo locating (are you kidding me- you are saying, ‘I’m here, go to my house and steal my stuff’), and other information is way too much information. Did you know that a lot of smartphones have geo locating on them and when you take a picture that information along with other information can be viewed with utilities and even freeware like XnView? So when you text or put the picture online, people can download the information and ‘see’ information about you
- Keep updates (Windows, Antivirus and Applications) on your computer and use Sumo or Secunia to update third party software. Use your software firewall and update firmware on routers when they are available.
- Use Immunet with your Antivirus
- Encrypt your files
- Encrypt portable drives
- Have a copier in your office? Remember the hard drive in it and remember it has your data.
- Visit StaySafeOnline and print posters, hand out flyers, go through the curriculum with students. Are you Law Enforcement, banking, industry or a business? Have your employees review the information. Restrict shares on computers.
- Encrypt your Wireless
- Visit the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity website for a list of tips

the right fIT
Often fellow bloggers bump into each others blogs and share ideas and thoughts. the right fIT is a good blog from a company’s view of information technology and news as an employer and partner for information technology services. One of their articles really caught my eye ( More Than Plugging the Gaps) -after being invited to possibly guest write for their blog. The article is very accurate on how IT is often viewed. As a teacher and private consultant (and dozens of IT hats in the real world), I often work with employers and recruiters and also work as an IT manager and I see the views they talk about. Go check them out.

How many calories does the IT brain use?
In a day, around 400 -500. Now that is a normal day of regular activities for anyone.
A human brain uses a (kilo)Calorie of energy in about 3.5 minutes. (About 120 per hour for talking alone) If you work IT and think and troubleshoot around 8 hours a day that would be in the neighborhood of 1680 calories (actually more but there is lunch and breaks). And you wonder why you are so tired?
Oh and that is why you want to snack all of the time….
