VirtualBox is now Oracle VM VirtualBox

leave a comment »

Hopefully Oracle leaves VirtualBox free for home users… well Oracle VM VirtualBox.

VirtualBox Version 3.2.0 is a major update and is available now. The following major new features were added:

  • Following the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle, the VirtualBox is now called Oracle VM VirtualBox and all references were changed without impacting compatibility.
  • Experimental support for Mac OS X guests
  • Memory ballooning to dynamically in- or decrease the amount of RAM used by a VM (64-bit hosts only) (see the manual for more information)
  • CPU hot-plugging for Linux (hot-add and hot-remove) and certain Windows guests (hot-add only) (see the manual for more information)
  • New Hypervisor features: with both VT-x/AMD-V on 64-bit hosts, using large pages can improve performance (see the manual for more information); also, on VT-x, unrestricted guest execution is now supported (if nested paging is enabled with VT-x, real mode and protected mode without paging code runs faster, which mainly speeds up guest OS booting)
  • Support for deleting snapshots while the VM is running
  • Support for multi-monitor guest setups in the GUI (see the manual for more information)
  • USB tablet/keyboard emulation for improved user experience if no Guest Additions are available
  • LsiLogic SAS controller emulation
  • RDP video acceleration
  • NAT engine configuration via API and VBoxManage
  • Guest Additions: added support for executing guest applications from the host system
  • OVF: enhanced OVF support with custom namespace to preserve settings that are not part of the base OVF standard

VirtualBox and Ubuntu 10.04

leave a comment »

Ubuntu continues to grow and the ease of installation and stability are excellent for any user.   With VirtualBox, Ubuntu can be ran on Windows 7 with ease while using very little resources.

The setup of VitualBox is easy and fast.  The 70mb download comes with a wizard for installation that even a novice can understand.   By downloading the Ubuntu ISO and copying it to a folder; a user only has to point to the downloaded file after clicking on the NEW OS and following the step by step instructions.   The configuration of VirtualBox is also simple and  is designed for novice users.

NTop for Windows

with 2 comments

NTOP is a great network monitoring tool used primarily with Linux based system.  However, in 2006 NTop released NTOP-XTRA which was designed for Windows XP.  This excellent tool works with Windows 7 and can be used to monitor your network.  Not as detailed as the Linux versions of NTop today, NTOP-XTRA for Windows is still an excellent graphical program.  NTOP-XTRA must be ran with firefox.

Note:  If you find and download the software below for Windows, you will start the OPENXTRA Commander services and open Firefox’s browser to http://127.0.0.1:3000

Because NTOP-XTRA installs Winpcap, you may elect to NOT install their version and download the lastest version here.

Experimenting with Linux is a great way to learn the operating system.  It is essential that you learn Linux if you are going to be in Information Technology.  Here’s a pictorial on installing Fedora Linux on VirtualBox.

VirtualBox (Wiki)  is free product from Oracle and can be used to virtualize operating systems within your operating system (regardless if it is on a laptop, desktop or server).

Once again cybercriminals are challenging end users with a link or file to check your computer for Windows 7 compatibility.   Don’t click on these links or files.  This is a nothing more than a ruse to get information from the users.  Good article over at BitDefender.
