Snap Server Information

leave a comment »

Here’s a link to thorough guides and reset information for Snap Servers.  Link

Remember when connecting Snap Servers with Vista and 7 computers you may have to adjust NTLM -

You may have devices on your network that you can no longer connect (Vista/Windows 7) to or you may not be able to network to Windows XP (for whatever reason, this works).  Actually this changes settings to accept NTLMv1 and NTLMv2 so that you can connect to Samba Servers, Snap Servers, Older Windows Computers or whatever….

1. Go to Run, Type Regedit and open this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa

2. If it doesn’t exist, create a DWORD value named
LmCompatibilityLevel

3. Set the value to 1

4. Reboot

Uninstall Old Drivers and Speed Up Your Computer

leave a comment »

One of the best ways to speed up your computer of course is to uninstall old programs.   A recent article showed that the installation of multiple programs on any computer could slow the computer’s boot time, response time and even the shutdown.

Just like programs;  installing network cards, video cards, wireless cards, usb drives and other hardware and even software will put drivers in your computer.  These non exsistant devices can be seen in the device manager by going to a command prompt as an administrator and typing – set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

Then open the device manager and click on View and Show Hidden Devices.  You will then see ‘faded’ devices that are still loading in the device manager.   These devices are hardware and/or software (yes, even software will load drivers that control hardware) that no longer are installed on your computer.

Note:  In regards to the software drivers – even if you uninstall the software many antivirus programs and firewalls leave junk behind.

Always use caution when removing drivers, editing the registry or working with any configuration that changes your system.

Go through these devices and remove any older hardware you know no longer exsist.  Rebooting your computer should result in a quicker response time.

Open a Command Prompt from Any Folder

leave a comment »

Networking and Computer professionals often use the command prompt to run commands.  To open a command prompt, users normally click on Start/Run or Start/Search and type CMD.   In Windows 7, this will be c:\user\yourname.

If you would like to open a command prompt in Vista or Windows 7, simply right click on the folder you want while holding down on the shift  and you will be given an option to open a command prompt.  If you continue, the command prompt will open and the path will be presented to you of  the folder you right clicked on as an administrator.

The Website Is Clean But The Ads May Not Be

with 2 comments

Drew and I along with other people have had immunet or AVG pop up on websites that are very popular.   Often it is the ads on the websites that are delivered by a marketing firm or ad server.  Below is a pop up from AVG showing a threat from another website while visiting a top rated news site.   Websites that have ads should scan the ads before displaying them…

Linux Rescue Disk

leave a comment »

SystemRescueCd is a Linux system rescue disk that is downloaded as an ISO to make a bootable CD-ROM or USB stick. This software is for administrating or repairing your system and data in the event your computer crashes. It is an easy way to provide administrator tasks on your computer, where you can create or edit partitions of the hard disk.  This software comes with a lot of linux software such as system tools (parted, partimage, fstools, …) and basic tools (editors, midnight commander, network tools).  The software is NOT installed on your computer and runs from your systems DVD/CD and memory.  SystemRescueCd can be used to perform administrator tasks on both linux servers or linux workstations.

Install Windows from a USB drive

leave a comment »

This is a small application (only 2.1MB) that allows you to convert your Windows installer CD/DVD to a bootable USB drive. Not only is it easy to use (does not require you to have any technical knowledge), it is also fully portable – No installation is required and you can bring it wherever you go.

Small Business Office Invalid Key

leave a comment »

This may be happening if what you purchased  is the Office Small Business 2007 “Medialess Licensing Kit” (MLK).  It is a DVD-movie style plastic package with no discs inside, just the product key and a Certificate of Auhenticity (CoA).

If you have the above, the trials for Office editions available at www.microsoft.com/office do not accept these MLK product keys.
