AVG near Top for detection – Notice the Big Guns

with one comment

We are always looking for ways to uninstall some of the Big Guns antivirus on workorders that come into our labs only to replace them with freeware.  Seems there is some truth behind it.   Link to PCWorld Article

I have now seen articles on how ‘bad’ free antivirus software is and watched the free software catch as many as the paid for version if not more…..

Uninstalling Symantec

leave a comment »

Several times we come across computers with Symantec protection with passwords.  If you come across this and want to uninstall the application, you can bypass the password by doing a simple registry change

  1. Click on Start – Go to Run and type Regedit.
  2. Go down to the following registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Administrator Only\Security\
  3. Change useVPuninstallpassword key from 1 to 0.
  4. Close Regedit -Uninstall the application – Reboot if necessary

Download and Run Symantec’s uninstall tool.

Should vendors make an uninstall tool or should the software’s uninstall work correctly?

Repartition Your Harddrive

leave a comment »

Windows Vista and 7 allows you to repartition your harddrive.  With Partition Wizard, you can repartition your harddrive on the fly.  I personally don’t like partitions.   You CAN’T make a backup drive from the same physical drive.  If you have a harddrive failure, the physical drive is DEAD.  Use another harddrive to backup to.  Pat and I have been stuck with partitions that we want to get rid of.  If you know of one for server, please comment.

If you don’t know which one to download,  type winver in the run line and hit enter.

TweetMyPC installs and listens for commands you submit from your phone or Twitter.  The program seems to work great and I am currently examining the security behind this application and I honestly believe Twitter will tighten their security.  I think this application has great potential.  Ease of use / Functionality – Well 5 Stars

Undelete Programs

leave a comment »

Steve T.  recently saved a local government agency a lot of time by undeleting a file that had been accidentally deleted.  His tool of choice.  DiskDigger.   Other good tools to use.  PCinspector, Pandora, Avira and smartrecovery for flashdrives.  Remember, if you think you deleted something, STOP.  Don’t run your computer anymore than you have to and recover on another drive or flash/thumbdrive to avoid writing over deleted files.   Also remember that some of these applications have to be installed on your computer.  This alone can destroy the erased data.  DiskDigger can be ran from a flashdrive thus increasing your chances.

Cloud Based version of Microsoft Office

with one comment

For the last several months, I have tried not to troll and ‘copy’ my fellow bloggers.  Being in an educational institution, the resource of information that comes from these industry experts has to be recognized.  Our school stays ahead of the industry and loads beta operating systems, virtualization, software that is state of the art in CAD, Drafting, Business Systems, Machine Tool, Industrial Maintenance and other programs.

Once again Rick has a great article that is being forwarded to both our Computer Information Technology (CIT) programs and Business Systems Technology (BST) programs.  Rick reviews and discusses -

A FREE cloud based version of Microsoft Office is coming…

Rick did you ever think you would be contributing to the future of students?  Once again thank you. – Steve
