Security and Your Company’s Network

As our students become young security analysts, they are not learning just how to update windows.  The art of securing a network falls on knowing all of the port numbers, monitoring traffic, policies and procedures, Windows and Linux updates, software updates, TCP/IP filtering, IDS monitoring, hardware and software firewalls, ACLs, proper sharing, Role Based Access Control, Mandatory Access Control,  Anti-virus updates, malware prevention, educating the end user and a dozen other items.

While there is dozens of applications ‘out there’, understanding the security behind preventing an intrusion from internal and external threats is one of the most complex careers any one can choose.   Computer and network security requires interdisciplinary skills and a lot of motivation.

In this economy and with the dependency companies have on computers; I hope managers and business owners don’t sacrifice security on their networks.   There is a big difference between your cousin ‘Eddie’ the family computer guru and an IT professional.
