Are you breaking the law with your Wireless Network?

with 3 comments

Students and industry always ask me if it is illegal to connect to a wireless network that is unsecure.   As early as 2005 (ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)) an individual was chared with a 3rd degree felony for connecting to a wireless network.  Given that fact, states like Tennessee have passed or proposed bills making it a crime to do so.  Burleson Consulting also believes that it is possible that the home owner could be sued (for negligence) if they leave their wireless unsecure and their network are used maliciously.

With a hardcore DA or sympathetic jury,  you could possibly be charged for connecting to a ‘hot spot’ that is marked customers only or a jury could award a vicitim of hacking (judgement against you) if you left your wireless open.

As ridiculous as all of this sounds, there are some rules that will save you.  Secure your wireless network and change the administrator’s password.  Only connect to a wi-fi hotspot as a customer even if you have to buy a cup of coffee or a small soda.

Uninstall Programs – Fix Windows Installer

leave a comment »

I always recommend Revo uninstaller but recently I used Safarp to uninstall a hung Office 2007 installation.  These two programs are excellent when uninstalling software and removing the ‘guts’ of programs.

Panda Cloud Antivirus Answers Questions

leave a comment »

Panda Cloud Antivirus is still in beta and the questions are being made about the technology and pricing.  According to Panda, it will be free forever and the technology is changing for the better.  Here’s the most common questions from the website’s blog:

  • Will Panda Cloud Antivirus continue being FREE after the beta is over?
  • Do I need to run a different antivirus at the same time as Cloud Antivirus?
  • Am I still protected when I’m not connected to the Internet?
  • After installing Cloud Antivirus I scanned my PC and it took a really long time. What’s up?
  • Are my files being sent to the cloud for scanning?
  • What exactly is sent to the cloud?
  • Cloud Antivirus detected a Trojan and deleted it. How can I get it back?
  • Why can’t I choose delete/block/ignore when it detects a Trojan?
  • Can I run Cloud Antivirus alongside my Norton360/AVG/Etc.?

…..Here’s their answers and more questions
