Don’t Shout at Hard Drives!
Failed to Backup – Journalspace.com
Journalspace.com had reached a rating of 106,000. That is one of the top websites in the world. Recently they lost a hard drive in a server that was mirroring. (They were using the mirror as a backup.) No other backups. Well, SCSI is good but if you mirror a database and that database is deleted, so can your data on the other drive. Mirroring and striping is NOT backing up. They have been in business since 2002.
Read the JournalSpace blog here
Mirroring: High availability
Backups: High reliability
1. Backup all your data daily
2. Backup frequently
3. Take some backups off-site
4. Keep old backups
5. Test your backups frequently
6. Secure all of your backups
7. Perform integrity checking often

Remote Control Planes and Autonomous Flight09
Lamont and I fly as often as we can. A lot of folks have hobbies that are far more expensive. GWS makes the Slow Stick Airplane that is around $35.00. With a simple three channel radio, and a BRUSHLESS motor and LiPO battery, you can get 20-45 minute flights. (Best beginner airplane and tough!)
Simple and Inexpensive
GWS slow stick w/modified wings w / winglets (orignial wing span 47″) Ready to Fly $150 w/ 3 channel radio

With this being a technical blog, our projects have grown to this point….
With a RangeVideo, an in-flight display and auto pilot to land, technology is growing by leaps and bounds (the economy will soon I hope!). This 5′ 3″ Predator has the in-flight display, auto pilot/landing, GPS, brushless engine, dual battery and 4 channel radio. (the above extras don’t come with the plane) -Plane and Radio $200 with extras $590…. Now before you say ouch on the price, there are more expensive hobbies out there.
RangeVideo’s autopilot in-flight display-
See links above for more information on these great products.
We hope to add this to our curriculum as an ‘extra’ (a fun weekend or two) to study programming…..
Disable Black UAC Screen and other tweaks – Tweak Utility for Vista and XP
I don’t mind the UAC prompt. I use Ubuntu and Windows and yes, I am use to entering passwords or approving changes. It is a great reminder for me. Your average person on the other hand is going to hit APPROVE anyway without thinking about what is changing on their system. This tweak utility is one of a million out there but is a good utility for techies or system admins. The tweak allows for you to disable UAC or the total “blackout” you sometimes get during installation (looks like your computer screen “goes blank”) The utility has other good features.
FastCopy – Improve XP and Vista’s copy times – Windows 7?
Vista really suffers from slow file transfer speeds locally and across a network. FastCopy improves the transfer speeds of XP and Vista. Will Windows 7 have this problem??
Local Transfer Rate: 7.90 MB/s
Network Transfer Rate: 1.50 MB/s
Vista Network Transfer Rate: 519 KB /S
That’s 2.95 times faster with FastCopy!

SSL Hack and MD5 – 30% of Online Transactions Not Safe
DarkReading has a good article on SSL hacks and the older MD5 technology. Their article and research shows 30% of sites with SSL technology still use the MD5 technology. To reassure the world, we use SHA-1 and 1024 bit certificates (in lieu of 128 bit or 256 bit). Although we create our own certificates and don’t use a CA on some applications, security is a high priority with any institution.
Our Certificate-
From DarkReading:
“This specific attack was only possible by colliding two MD5 hashes, but it points to a bigger issue with the way SSL certificates are issued,” says HD Moore, creator of Metasploit and director of security research for BreakingPoint Systems.
One big problem is that some certification authorities, or CAs, still use the older MD5 encryption technology, which is known to be weak, rather than the newer and stronger SHA-1 cryptographic algorithm.
