I have two external drives and I have done this to both of them to help with I/O performance.
Right Click My Computer and select Properties. Click on Hardware.
Click on Device Manager.
Expand Disk drives and locate your external drive from the list.
Right click on the drive and select Properties.
On the Policies tab, select Optimize for performance.
Check Enable write caching on the disk and Enable advanced performance.
Hit OK and reboot.
