Every operating system has its faults. Over the past two months, my laptop has slowed to a crawl. I ran every registry cleaner, ccleaner, defragmented, rootkit, anti-spyware and virus software known to mankind. One of the major symptoms was if I right clicked, my machine would hesitate for 30 to 40 seconds. Tonight, I dug in and developed a theory…If you know anything about networking, you get the same delay if your computer is connecting to another computer on your network. When computers talk, they create a SYN-ACK (A “hello I am here to talk to you”) request.
I opened up a command prompt and made the window small so I could see my desktop. Next I typed in netstat -a in the “dos” window. I then moved my mouse to the desk top and right clicked on an icon and immediately moved back to the command prompt window and hit enter. My computer was trying to connect to an old mapped drive I had setup several months back!
As you can see above, my computer was trying to connect to an ip address that was no longer valid.
I opened up regedit from the run line and searched for the ip address. I then deleted any references in the registry. This solved the problem. My entire computer sped up. Because windows explorer is integrated tightly with networking, all folders and programs were affected by this.
